What Turkey offers as a near-shore hub for EU and US buyers
Turkey sits at a rare geographic and industrial intersection. For European customers, it is a 3–7 day sea-freight route from Aegean ports to Mediterranean and North Sea destinations. For US customers, it offers reliable ocean-freight windows and container availability that Asian lanes have lost.

The three near-shore trade-offs to test in an RFQ
Any nearshoring decision should be validated on three dimensions:total delivered cost (not FOB alone — include freight, duty and inventory-carrying cost),metallurgical fit (do the supplier’s grades and finishes match your downstream process?), anddocumentation quality (does 3.1 arrive with the shipment, and is heat-lot traceability real?). A near-shore supplier that cannot answer all three does not solve the problem you thought it did.
Lead-time expectations from a Turkish supplier
For standard cold-drawn and annealed wire from a mid-size Turkish mill, plan on 2–4 weeks from PO confirmation. Custom grades or specialised packaging can push that to 5–6 weeks. Freight adds another 5–10 days to most European destinations and 20–25 days to the US East Coast under normal conditions.
A serious supplier will publish confirmed lead times and hold to them —ask for lead-time confirmation as part of the initial quotation.
When nearshoring does not make sense
Nearshoring works best for critical-path wire grades where reliability, documentation and shorter transit are worth a small premium. It works less well for pure commodity binding-wire volumes where the Asian price advantage still dominates. Be honest about which category each SKU sits in — and near-shore the ones that matter to your quality auditors and to your production schedule.
